City walking

The Building right outside of Collarts always intrigues me, it is white and it has a red door and I always see random men going in there. sometimes they’re wearing suits, sometimes they’re standing there having a ciggy. I need to know more…..

I left home extra early this morning with six shots left on my roll of black and white film, determined to finish it before my first class.

Even though I live in such a beautiful part of the world, there’s something about the city that always pulls me in. It’s busy, unpredictable, full of little moments if you slow down enough to catch them.

I’m getting close to the pointy end of the trimester with my first assessment due soon, so I’ve started thinking about how I want to present my final folio. While I was walking the city streets today, I had this idea, maybe I could split the folio in two. One side showing city walks, the other side showing country walks. I like the contrast between the two, and imagining them hanging side by side in a gallery makes the whole project feel a bit more real.

I finished the roll of film while I was out and dropped it off to get developed. Surprisingly, they had it ready for me tonight. When I saw the scans, I was a bit disappointed there’s a lot of grain, and it looks like I underexposed a few of the shots. But even with all that, there’s something about film that just feels right. It’s imperfect, it’s nostalgic, and somehow, it fits the way this whole project has been unfolding.

Cute little elderly man walking his best mate after going to collect the morning paper. I imagine he has some stories to tell.

I was on my photowalk this morning and I was really loving the dappled lighting from the early morning sun, there were pockets of light and shadows. It was kind of a defining moment for me, I had been able to get out of the car, and instead of being anxious, I walked and observed, and because I was observing I was able to notice the little things.

I was almost at Collarts and I had 2 images left and I noticed this elderly man walking his dog up a head. I took the first image and then noticed he was crossing the road, and I liked how the light and shadows were on the house over the road so I stopped and waited for him to walk past so I could sneakily take his photo. I really thought I was paying attention to what I was doing. If I had just waited 2 seconds he would have walked into the light pocket and it would have been perfect.

I just know that this image is going to have me looking for moments like this in the future.
